You can use StopUSB to control USB devices connected through USB ports. StopUSB controls USB devices and blocks unknown devices of all types considered as drives (USB and Firewire removable drives, memory cards, memory sticks, thumb drives, etc.). At the same time, StopUSB does not block such necessary devices as USB keyboard, mouse, etc.
One can also control USB devices by setting a password. All unwanted USB device connections thus become protected with a password and only authorized users will be able to connect an unknown device to the computer.
How to control USB devices with a password:
- Start StopUSB.
- Click General Settings.
- Click the Set Password button and specify the password.
- Enable the Ask this password for unknown removable storage devices option.
Also, StopUSB allows you to create the whitelist of devices that must never be blocked. Such devices may include USB tokens, for example. StopUSB controls what device is connected at the moment and blocks access to it if it is not on the whitelist.
To add a device to the whitelist:
- Start StopUSB.
- Click Device Whitelist.
- Click the Add New button.
- Connect the device if it is not connected yet.
- Select the device in the list and click Add to Whitelist.
StopUSB logs all actions with removable storage devices. Logged events: connecting/mounting a USB device, unmounting/disconnecting a USB device, files copied to a USB device, files modified on a USB device. You can use the log file to control USB devices and actions performed with it.
To open the log file:
- Start StopUSB.
- Click Event Log.
- Click the Open Event Log button.
You can configure what events should be logged. To configure an event log:
- Start StopUSB.
- Click Event Log.
- Enable or disable the Log when device is connected/disconnected option.
- Enable or disable the Log operations with files option.
StopUSB can be administered remotely and installed silently. One can protect and control all USB devices of an entire network.
